Changes to Flexible Working Requests
On 30th June 2014, under the Children and Families Act, requests requests for flexible working in the work place will no longer be tied to caring for a child and will be open to all. Worryingly the upcoming ACAS guidance on the change appears to contradict the statute and there’s not even a need to state the reason for the request. The changes do bring in some flexibility in terms of the process but also some uncertainty. Is obesity a disability?
The European Court of Justice is to rule shortly on whether obesity can be classed as a disability. Given increasing levels of obesity in the UK it’s ruling could potentially have implications on the adjustments employers make in the workplace for overweight employees.
